The best weeknight dinners are often the simplest ones. Not because simplicity is a virtue in itself, but because a dish with five well-chosen ingredients, properly cooked, is almost always better than a dish with fifteen ingredients thrown together in a hurry.
Five-ingredient cooking also removes the decision fatigue of complex recipes. When there are only five things to buy and five things to prepare, the path from "what's for dinner?" to "dinner is ready" is shorter and less stressful.
The Rules
Salt, pepper, and oil don't count. These are assumed to be in every kitchen. The five ingredients are the ones that define the dish.
Quality matters more with fewer ingredients. When you can't hide behind complexity, each ingredient carries more weight. Use good olive oil, fresh garlic, and properly seasoned proteins.
Technique fills the gap. A 5-ingredient dinner that's properly cooked — high heat, proper seasoning, correct timing — tastes better than a 15-ingredient dinner that's rushed.
